In a matchup against the Detroit Tigers, Andrew Benintendi was not included in the Chicago White Sox lineup on Friday, facing left-hander Tarik Skubal. Despite Benintendi’s recent success, including a pinch-hit grand slam that secured a 5-1 victory over the New York Yankees, White Sox Manager Will Venable has typically benched him when opposing left-handed pitchers. Instead, Randall Grichuk was designated as the DH, hitting a home run off Skubal in the first inning.
During the game, Skubal expressed frustration in the fifth inning after striking out Colson Montgomery with the bases loaded, pointing and yelling towards the White Sox dugout as he headed off the mound. The reason for his outburst or who it was directed at was unclear following discussions among the umpires.
Benintendi’s appearances against lefties have been limited this season. After signing a five-year, $75 million contract in 2023, he has adjusted to this role in the team’s rebuilding phase. Grichuk, with a .987 OPS against left-handed pitching, has been favored in similar situations.
Reflecting on his reduced playtime, Benintendi shared that he understands his role as part of the team’s strategy. “Last year, too, you kind of see things and know the trends as you get older. So I’m just glad to be a part of it and contribute.” he said. Approaching 32 years of age, he acknowledges his evolving place within the team, demonstrating flexibility for the sake of winning despite a decline in starting positions.
Venable noted that Benintendi still holds a crucial role, both on the field and in the clubhouse. “He’s somebody that still very much has an important role,” Venable said. Benintendi, along with Grichuk, remains a veteran presence among the team’s predominantly younger lineup, contributing leadership and experience as needed.
Since the injury to Munetaka Murakami, Benintendi’s form has notably improved, hitting six home runs and securing 14 RBIs over 46 at-bats, marking his career-best OPS for June at 1.095. “I feel like June has proven to be the best month of my career,” Benintendi stated, recognizing this peak performance period.
His recent grand slam stands as a pivotal moment for the Sox, who were struggling against the Yankees before this crucial hit. It marked a rare occurrence, being the first pinch-hit grand slam for the Sox since 2012, a milestone that highlights his contribution amidst challenging matchups.
Heading into a series against the Tigers, the Sox recognized the implications, with Detroit trailing significantly and dealing with setbacks, such as Justin Verlander’s absence due to a hamstring injury. Skubal, reflecting on the team’s precarious standing, recognized the pressure of these matches, treating them with playoff-level intensity.
For the White Sox, navigating through recent games against top-tier teams has been rigorous, but their performance, winning six out of eleven games against formidable opponents, demonstrated their competitive edge. Despite these successes, challenges remain as they continue striving towards significant standings in the league.
