Measles Exposure at LAX and Hotel Raises Concerns

4 days ago 0

Health officials have announced that a traveler carrying measles may have exposed others at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and a nearby hotel. This incident took place after the traveler arrived in Los Angeles County earlier this month.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported that they are investigating a confirmed measles case involving a traveler who was on Cathay Pacific Flight CX 884, arriving on June 11. While passing through Los Angeles County, the traveler was contagious, potentially exposing others at LAX and the Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel.

This marks the sixth reported measles case in Los Angeles County this year. Health officials warn that the risk could rise with increased summer travel and international visitors attending the FIFA World Cup events in the area.

Exposure Details

Health officials advised that anyone present at the Tom Bradley International Terminal between 10 a.m. and noon on June 11 might have been exposed. Another potential exposure was identified at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel, at 5711 W. Century Blvd., from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. the same day.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is collaborating with local health departments to inform passengers who were seated near the infected person on the flight.

Monitoring Symptoms

Officials recommend that those at either location during the specified times should watch for measles symptoms between seven and 21 days following exposure. Monitoring should continue until July 2.

Dr. Muntu Davis, Los Angeles County Health Officer, emphasized the importance of vaccination. “As measles cases increase, it is essential for residents to ensure they are fully protected,” he said. “The MMR vaccine is the safest and most reliable way to prevent measles and protect oneself, family, and community.”

Symptoms and Prevention

Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, and red and watery eyes, followed by a rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.
