Charles Kushner, serving as the U.S. ambassador to France, exemplifies a distinct approach to diplomacy under President Trump. His actions have stirred the French establishment, particularly due to his allegations of antisemitism.
During a visit to France, Kushner paid a solemn tribute at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery. He recited the Kaddish prayer over the graves of five Jewish American soldiers who died in World War I. For Kushner, an Orthodox Jew, this act underscored his devotion, but his outspoken advocacy for Jews in contemporary France has garnered more notice.
Kushner, linked to Trump through family ties, began his tenure with tension. Shortly after his arrival in July, he criticized the French government for insufficient efforts to counter antisemitism. Nearly a year later, he argues the issue has worsened. Kushner has even proposed offering refugee status to French Jews, highlighting their precarious situation.
In a recent interview, Kushner stated, “I want to provide more options for Jews here to relocate to America instead of only Israel. They feel fearful and neglected by their government.” Such statements, initially made in a letter to President Macron, have strained his relations with the French Foreign Ministry. Kushner, aged 72, has been twice called to discuss his interference in French affairs. However, he ignored these summons, leading to threats from Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot regarding further official engagements.
