Israeli airstrikes on Saturday morning targeted southern Lebanon, resulting in at least 16 fatalities, including two children. This follows the U.S. announcement of a new ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah at the request of President Donald Trump. According to Lebanese civil defense and media reports, several towns were hit, and the Lebanese news agency NNA highlighted an airstrike on Arabsalim killing three people and a drone strike on Deir al-Zahrani taking one life. The agency reported that seven individuals remained trapped under debris. The Lebanese army confirmed the loss of a soldier between Kfar Rumman and Nabatieh.
The Israel Defense Forces stated that Hezbollah breached the ceasefire by launching over 50 projectiles at IDF soldiers in southern Lebanon during the night. Consequently, Israel targeted what it identified as Hezbollah positions. The IDF affirmed its dedication to the ceasefire agreement. Meanwhile, Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group, insisted it had maintained the ceasefire since Friday evening and accused Israel of fabricating excuses to breach it.
The escalation jeopardizes U.S. peace negotiations with Iran. Only a day earlier, President Trump had requested Israel cease strikes on Lebanon, and Israel’s ambassador to the U.S. mentioned a halt on offensive operations. Images from the strikes show smoke rising from the town of Shweikin and the Ali al-Tahir hill area, both in the Nabatieh Governorate.
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson announced Pakistan’s interior minister, Mohsin Naqvi, was in Tehran for discussions with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Talks with Pakistan, acting as mediator, are ongoing. Meetings between U.S. and Iranian officials in Switzerland were postponed. These negotiations aim to finalize deeply contentious issues, including Iran’s nuclear program. A U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding mandates the immediate cessation of hostilities, including in Lebanon. Although Israel was not directly involved in the deal, Iran warned that further Israeli strikes would breach its terms.
U.S. intelligence agencies anticipate that Israel might persist with attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon, threatening the emerging peace. The continued airstrikes occur amidst tension between the Trump administration and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his far-right allies, who condemn the deal, advocating for intensified strikes. Facing an October election, Netanyahu requires far-right backing to maintain power. Jonathan Panikoff from the Atlantic Council commented on Netanyahu’s predicament, juxtaposing it with Iran’s perceived growing strategic strength.
Netanyahu had pledged to occupy southern Lebanon, and ongoing strikes have stalled talks, exasperating U.S. officials. Vice President J.D. Vance censured Israeli actions, stating the lack of appreciation for American support. Despite the tensions, maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz persists. However, experts suggest shipping normalization might face delays due to remaining mine threats. IDF spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin asserted the ongoing presence and actions of Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, emphasizing the priority to safeguard civilians.
