SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Wyndham Clark demonstrated remarkable composure under pressure at the U.S. Open on Saturday at Shinnecock Hills. Despite the formidable challenge posed by the course, Clark maintained his lead with key par saves and a decisive eagle on the par-5 16th, finishing with an even-par 70. This performance extended his lead to an impressive six shots, a margin never before lost in the history of the U.S. Open.
Scottie Scheffler, acknowledging the crowd after a birdie on No. 16, made significant strides during the third round, carding a 69. The wind subsided at Shinnecock Hills, allowing only two players to break par: Emiliano Grillo during high winds and Scheffler. Clark narrowly missed joining them but still posted the lowest 54-hole score ever at Shinnecock Hills with a 7-under 203.
Clark is poised to add another U.S. Open title alongside his 2023 victory at Los Angeles Country Club. However, standing in his way is world number one, Scottie Scheffler. Sunday presents Scheffler with a rare opportunity for the career Grand Slam on a significant day, coinciding with Father’s Day and his 30th birthday.
During a post-round interview with NBC, Scheffler expressed the significance of the day: “There’s a lot of stuff going on. A special day. The tournament means a lot to me. Going to go out there and try to do my best and execute. I’ve been fighting like heck all week to stay in this tournament.”
Scheffler began with two bogeys but rallied with a strong back nine, highlighted by a 65-foot chip-in on the 14th, resulting in three consecutive birdies. His only regret was missing a 4-foot birdie putt on the final hole but managed to secure his place in the last group.
Others faced challenges on the course. Sam Stevens briefly closed within two shots of Clark but faded with three bogeys starting the back nine, finishing at 72. Tom Kim, similarly, struggled at crucial moments, matching Stevens’ score. Sahith Theegala ended with a balanced round of one birdie, one bogey, and 16 pars for a 70, typical of U.S. Open play. Only five players remained under par.
