Bolivia’s President Rodrigo Paz announced a state of emergency, empowering the military to disperse roadblocks that have limited fuel and food supplies. The decision comes after weeks of protests demanding Paz’s resignation over government austerity measures, such as fuel subsidy cancellations. Violent confrontations have caused 365 arrests and 37 injuries, with 17 deaths linked to medical care access issues.
Road barricades have isolated La Paz, leading to fuel shortages and limited hospital access resulting in seven fatalities due to lack of medical attention. “This state of emergency aims to restore freedom,” Paz stated in a broadcast. Businesses have closed, and hospital oxygen supplies are depleted, while protests persist, demanding Paz’s departure.
The state of emergency intends to ensure fuel availability, with roadblock-obstructed tankers unable to deliver supplies. The decree bans street blockages and mandates military support to police for order restoration, road reopening, and civilian protection. The decree emphasizes maintenance of daily activity without impeding personal rights, spanning 90 days or potentially ending sooner with reduced violence.
In power since November, Paz succeeded Bolivia’s Movement Toward Socialism (MAS) party, offering fixes for economic crisis challenges. Despite addressing fuel shortages, problems with low-quality gasoline have arisen. Legislation to bolster foreign investment and economic growth languishes in Congress.
Protests are led by groups previously aligned with MAS, accusing negligence. Challenges stem from both right and left factions, with ex-President Evo Morales, sought for statutory rape charges, backing protests for new elections.
The U.S. supports Paz, restoring relations after strained ties under Morales. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio pledged aid to counter shortages, while Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth condemned protests as attempts to overthrow the government, cautioning those profiting from disturbances.
