U.S. and Iran Begin New Phase of Negotiations

3 days ago 0

Vice President JD Vance arrived in Switzerland early Sunday to initiate a fresh round of talks with Iran. The Trump administration is focused on achieving a lasting agreement after a newly signed ceasefire. Vance landed shortly before 6 a.m. local time and is set to join White House envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, for the negotiations.

Swiss authorities confirmed on Saturday that the Iranian delegation had reached and was heading to Bürgenstock, the anticipated location for discussions. Initially scheduled for Friday, the negotiations involving the U.S., Iran, Qatar, and Pakistan were postponed, according to Switzerland’s foreign ministry.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is also expected to be a part of the discussions, as reported by Axios.

These negotiations follow days after President Trump signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Iran post-G7 summit at the Palace of Versailles. This agreement initiated a 60-day ceasefire and set a framework for comprehensive negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict between the two nations.

In a Truth Social post Saturday, Trump cautioned that the United States might impose tolls in the Strait of Hormuz if the negotiations fail to yield a permanent agreement before the ceasefire expires.

Before his departure from Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, Vance highlighted the mission’s success criteria as structurally setting up the negotiations.

“I think number one, getting things structured properly and establishing the actual framework for negotiations,” Vance remarked.

He further explained their approach, “We’ll have principal political leadership at the top, with the technical team remaining on the ground.”

Vance plans to stay in Switzerland for a short period and previewed some topics expected to be addressed during the negotiations.

“We’re aiming to make progress on the nuclear issue and on the Lebanon ceasefire issue,” Vance stated.

The Vice President recognized Iran’s potential interest in other discussions as well.

Vance noted that despite ongoing clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, the situation in Lebanon showed signs of improvement.

“Despite recent headlines, conditions are improving,” he commented, aware of the challenges of sporadic violence in the area.

The goal, Vance emphasized, is to prevent escalation and sustain the ceasefire.

“The main issue is the cycle of responses following any shooting. We need to halt the violence long enough for the ceasefire to hold,” he added.

Pakistan has also declared involvement, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir participating in technical-level discussions in Switzerland.
