Many recall the schoolkid who would swipe lunches from others. Similarly, sea lions display a comparable behavior, and they don’t seem to grow out of it. A video circulating online captures a fisherman thrilled about his likely first yellowfin tuna. Unfortunately, a massive sea lion had different intentions.
A moment documented on video shows the fisherman posing with his catch near the boat when a sea lion suddenly appears, targeting the tuna. Despite the fisherman’s effort to retain his catch, the sea lion proves too powerful. He eventually lets go of the fish. This scene reveals concerns about sea lions affecting salmon and steelhead trout populations in the Pacific Northwest.
The sea lion manages to snatch the yellowfin, leaving the fisherman to stumble backward as his catch vanishes into the ocean. For viewers, it offers a humorous spectacle from afar. Yet, it’s less amusing for those who’ve spent hours fishing only to have their catch taken by a sea lion.
Such incidents occur more frequently than most realize. Experts call this behavior ‘depredation,’ which refers to marine mammals taking fish directly from people’s fishing lines or boats. Sea lions engage in this often because they are intelligent and learn to link fishing activities with food opportunities.
In some regions, anglers are so familiar with this routine that they anticipate sea lions might appear for a convenient meal. For instance, a large sea lion, known as Chonkers, sits confidently at Fishermen’s Wharf, suggesting these acts are not new to him.
The fisherman in the video can still claim he caught his first yellowfin tuna. However, he won’t enjoy a tuna meal that night.
