President Donald Trump labeled The New York Times’ coverage of the situation in Iran as “treasonous.” He plans to include the report in his ongoing legal action against the newspaper.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump expressed his outrage over the Times’ reporting, describing it as full of “FAKE & MADE UP ‘FACTS'” and treasonous. He accused the newspaper of being “corrupt and failing,” emphasizing his intent to incorporate their reporting into his multi-billion dollar defamation suit.
Trump’s $15 billion lawsuit against the Times, filed last September, was dismissed by a judge who criticized the complaint’s language as irrelevant. In response, Trump submitted a revised 40-page complaint to the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida in October. This newer filing names the newspaper, publisher Penguin Random House, and specific journalists as defendants.
The president’s comments followed his condemnation of a Times analysis that suggested the prolonged conflict in Iran had little strategic change. Contrary to this analysis, Trump insisted that Iran’s military and economy had suffered significant damage.
The Times defended its reporting, maintaining that Trump’s lawsuit lacks merit and aims to suppress independent journalism. Additionally, Trump criticized an article claiming little had changed after four months of conflict, countering with a detailed account of Iran’s supposed military and economic decline. Trump cited issues like the country’s depleted military forces, severe inflation, and economic instability.
Newsweek attempted to reach Trump’s attorneys and those representing the Times outside regular office hours for comments. Trump has previously pursued legal actions against other media organizations such as ABC News and CBS News’ 60 Minutes, which were settled out of court. He also filed a suit against The Wall Street Journal following their report on his connections to Jeffrey Epstein.
