The Boston Celtics explored trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo by offering Jaylen Brown along with two unprotected first-round picks. However, the Milwaukee Bucks opted for a deal with Miami, leaving Boston to manage the aftermath.
Brown, awarded the 2024 Finals MVP, is now the subject of increased trade demands. ESPN’s Shams Charania highlights that the Celtics seek at least four first-round picks for Brown, aged 29, who had a standout season with averages of 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists, securing second-team All-NBA honors. Despite interest from teams like the Nuggets, Clippers, Blazers, and Hornets, no agreement has materialized.
ESPN’s Vince Goodwill criticized Boston’s handling of the situation on “Get Up.” He remarked, “The Celtics have mishandled this from the beginning. If trading Brown for Giannis was the goal, they should have maximized their efforts, as it’s now become an embarrassing predicament.” Goodwill emphasized that Brown didn’t demand a trade, but Boston’s approach reflected disrespect.
Further illustrating the scenario, Brown never requested a trade or extension while contributing significantly to Boston’s 56-win season and achieving the second seed in the Eastern Conference. This contrasts with other players who generally seek trades due to dissatisfaction or contract disagreements.
Currently, many wonder if Boston can find a team ready to meet the steep demands of four first-round picks, given their compromised leverage.
