Jordan Spieth Expresses Concerns Over Betting’s Impact on Golf

1 month ago 0

Jordan Spieth expressed concern about changes in sports fan behavior, emphasizing a desire for a return to earlier standards. This sentiment came ahead of the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Illinois. When asked whether golf crowds have become rowdier, particularly after Wyndham Clark’s experience at the U.S. Open, Spieth pointed to gambling as a contributing factor.

“I do think that betting in golf is something that’s going to have to be tackled here soon,” Spieth commented. He highlighted how the legalized betting on events could influence crowd behavior and interactions during tournaments.

Spieth noted the unique vulnerability of golf because fans can potentially influence the outcome of the game. This aspect sets golf apart from other sports, making the impact of fan involvement more direct.

Former ambassador for FanDuel, Spieth acknowledged that betting’s influence has grown significantly in recent years, tying much of the current fan behavior to these developments.

“Fan vitriol is not a crazy new thing,” Spieth remarked. “But most of it now has to do with betting.”

Clark faced fan hostility at Shinnecock Hills, and New York golf fans were criticized during a Ryder Cup event. This led to opinions like those of Golf Channel’s Eamon Lynch, who labeled Long Island fans negatively.
