Former Child Actor Daveigh Chase’s Death Attributed to AIDS

The County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s office has confirmed that former child actor Daveigh Chase died from AIDS on June 16. Chase, who was 35 years old, was widely recognized for her voice role as Lilo in Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” and her memorable performance in the 2002 horror film “The Ring.” Her death, which occurred in a Los Angeles hospital, was also connected to “chronic polysubstance abuse” as noted in the medical examiner records. Her father, John David Schwallier, reported to The New York Times that she faced complications from bacterial meningitis and a blood infection prior to her passing.

Chase’s struggle with drug addiction started early, Schwallier disclosed, beginning when she was 13. At the time of her death, she was reportedly homeless in Los Angeles, living with her boyfriend. The estrangement from her divorced parents further complicated her lifestyle, described by her father as unsurprising given her circumstances. In a communication with The Associated Press, Schwallier remarked on his daughter’s tragic passing, expressing regret that she could not receive more help and support.

Chase commenced her career in entertainment at a young age. She auditioned for the role of Lilo in “Lilo & Stitch” at just eight years old. Her portrayal of Samara in “The Ring” earned her an MTV Movie Award for best villain. She also lent her voice to the lead character in the 2001 animated film “Spirited Away,” and was cast in the 2001 movie “Donnie Darko” and the 2003 television series “Oliver Beene.” Born in Las Vegas, she grew up in Albany, Oregon, beginning her journey in singing and dancing at the tender age of three.
