Soccer Comeback: Ella Burke’s Triumphant Return

Ella Burke, a former Naperville Central soccer star, returns to the field with renewed vigor. After years of major injuries, she feared she might never play her beloved sport again. Burke’s recovery and subsequent participation in the sport have become a joyous spectacle for her admirers.

Recovery and Return

Burke, now a senior at the University of Cincinnati, is known for her resilience as one of the state’s fiercest defenders during her time with the Redhawks. Her strength was put to the test with serious injuries that sidelined her for almost two years. Her comeback with Aurora’s River Light FC, which plays in the USL W League, was celebrated widely.

“We were really excited to have her,” River Light coach Anne Iwinski expressed. Burke sent a last-minute text letting us know she was home for the summer and wanted to join us. We welcomed her eagerly.”

Iwinski, a member of the Naperville Central Athletic Hall of Fame, shares backgrounds with Burke as they both pursued basketball and soccer in high school and later proceeded to Division I soccer careers. Burke initially played for River Light prior to sustaining a torn ACL and meniscus. “In practice, I took a wrong step and knew immediately I was injured,” Burke recalled. This injury ended her sophomore season prematurely.

Overcoming Health Challenges

Burke hoped for a return during her junior year but faced another setback with compartment syndrome. “Running caused severe calf pain, and my toes felt numb,” Burke explained. “I couldn’t train properly.” The demanding compartment syndrome test involved calve injections. It showed high muscle pressure levels, which sometimes necessitate amputation.

Burke prepared for a possible disqualification from playing. “We caught it early enough to prevent severe consequences, like losing my legs, so I was fortunate,” she said. Burke’s successful surgery and clearance to play came in January, leaving her pain-free despite her scars.

Back on the Field

As River Light FC’s Ella Burke once again took charge during a game, she impressed fans by challenging opponents vigorously. Alyssa Gluting, the team’s goalkeeper, recognized Burke’s prowess from her high school days. “Playing against her was tough, but now it’s exciting to be on the same team,” Gluting remarked.

Burke played a pivotal role during River Light’s win over RKC Third Coast, securing the field’s left side and executing vital overlap runs.

“Her field control and closing space accurately reflect her DI potential,” Iwinski praised.

Burke retains three more years of eligibility but hasn’t decided to use them all. She plans to pursue physical therapy, inspired by her injury ordeal. “These experiences shaped my career choice,” Burke stated.

Burke also enjoys her family’s support at games, with her sister Emerson leading Naperville Central to a state final. “Throughout recovery, I doubted I’d run again. Playing now is a blessing, and I’m truly grateful,” Burke expressed.
