Socialist Victory in Colorado Marks Progressive Surge in Democratic Primaries

Melat Kiros, a socialist candidate backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has emerged victorious in Denver, unseating 14-term incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette in a significant primary upset. This marks the 27th primary win for progressive candidates this election cycle, raising concerns within the Democratic Party and drawing sharp criticism from President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

The progressive movement is gaining traction across the United States. Recent victories in New York City and Colorado are setting the stage for upcoming Democratic contests in states such as Missouri, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Florida. These states are now in the spotlight as the left attempts to expand its influence beyond isolated city victories.

Cori Bush, a former Missouri congresswoman, highlighted this momentum on social media, asserting that St. Louis would follow Denver’s lead. Having previously defeated Democratic Rep. Lacy Clay in 2020 but losing her seat two years later, Bush, who aligns with the far left, is now contesting in a rematch against Clay.

In Michigan, the progressive wave targets key battlegrounds. Abdul El-Sayed, a previous gubernatorial candidate, is in the race to succeed retiring Sen. Gary Peters. Backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders and endorsed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, El-Sayed represents the left’s push for change amid unprecedented outside spending against them.

Wisconsin is also a focus, with State Rep. Francesca Hong seen as a strong contender to take over from retiring Governor Tony Evers. Similarly, in Florida, DSA-backed Oliver Larkin is challenging incumbent Rep. Jared Moskowitz.

Kiros’ success echoes wider progressive victories, supported by the Justice Democrats, known for aiding “Squad” members like Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar in their ascent to Congress. Progressive victories continue to reshape the Democratic landscape, providing Republicans with further fuel to label Democrats as radical, emphasizing the challenges the GOP faces in holding onto their House majority.

Republicans, amid this shifting political climate, emphasize what they perceive as a rising communist threat within the Democratic Party. Vice President Vance recently articulated concerns on Fox News, stating the perceived movement towards dismantling the United States reflects communist ideologies.
