Collapse of Office Building Conversion Disrupts Midtown Manhattan

4 weeks ago 0

On July 7, 2026, a partial collapse occurred at a 37-story office building undergoing conversion into residential housing located on East 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan. Offices and hotels in the area were evacuated. Traffic was halted, but no injuries were reported.

Construction workers noticed structural issues early Tuesday morning. Cliff Johnsen from the Local 638 steamfitters union observed beams bending and floors sagging. The building was at risk of crumbling, leading to an emergency evacuation of the site at 235 East 42nd Street, near Grand Central Terminal and the United Nations.

A supervisor called 911, initiating a swift response from emergency officials. Nearby buildings were evacuated, and streets were closed to pedestrians and vehicles due to the potential for a partial collapse. Officials confirmed no injuries but noted significant structural damage between the 21st and 26th floors. The building stood but remained unstable.

The incident displaced dozens of businesses and left tourists stranded as the city established a “frozen zone” over several blocks. The cause is under investigation.

The building conversion project aimed to tackle Midtown’s empty office spaces and address the city’s housing shortage. Developers had planned to complete the largest office-to-residential conversion in city history next year. However, the collapse clouds the project’s future as inspectors assess the damage and identify necessary repairs.
