An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Missouri has received praise from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for delivering crucial medical assistance to a driver involved in a severe accident. The incident occurred while the officer was returning home, according to DHS.
The officer, Curtland Sawyer, who serves at the St. Louis sub-office of ICE, witnessed a collision between a vehicle and a tractor-trailer near Festus, Missouri on July 11. Reacting swiftly, Sawyer stopped to help the injured driver.
According to DHS, Sawyer provided critical medical care by applying a tourniquet to the driver’s arm, effectively controlling life-threatening bleeding. He stayed with the driver until emergency medical technicians arrived to continue the care.
“ICE law enforcement officer Curtland Sawyer immediately delivered lifesaving medical care to a driver involved in a severe collision in Missouri. Officer Sawyer is a hero,” stated DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis.
Assistant Secretary Bis emphasized that the officers are exemplary and always ready to act when someone needs help. She urged individuals to acknowledge ICE officers for their service to the nation.
This act of bravery is among several recent rescue efforts highlighted by DHS. In a separate event last month, an ICE officer in Florida rescued a child from a pool and performed CPR. Additionally, ICE officers in Milwaukee freed a woman trapped in her overturned vehicle following a crash caused by another driver.
