Steve Yzerman Steps Down as Detroit Red Wings GM

The Detroit Red Wings experienced another twist in their eventful offseason. On Wednesday, franchise icon and General Manager Steve Yzerman announced his decision to step down from his role.

While Yzerman remains with the organization, he will transition to an advisory role for CEO Chris Ilitch. According to NHL.com, the search for a new general manager has already commenced. The team plans to consider both internal and external candidates for the position.

Yzerman, celebrated as one of the greatest Red Wings in history, captained teams that won three Stanley Cups. His leadership was pivotal in forming what many regard as some of the most talented rosters, especially the 2002 team. These achievements made him a logical choice to help the Red Wings return to prominence when he became GM in 2019.

Despite his past success with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Yzerman’s tenure with the Red Wings did not yield a playoff appearance since the team last reached the postseason in 2016. This led to dissatisfaction and a trade request from Detroit’s captain and native, Dylan Larkin.

“If another individual, not linked as closely to the Red Wings, had the same results, he likely would not have lasted as long,” some commentators suggested about Yzerman’s tenure.

The decision to maintain Yzerman in his role for so long may have influenced Larkin’s decision to seek a trade. Player trade requests are common in modern sports; however, Larkin’s case highlights concerns about the franchise’s current and future state.
