Toronto Raptors’ Trade Strategy
The Toronto Raptors made headlines by acquiring Kawhi Leonard in a trade deal on June 30. Leonard, known for securing Toronto’s first NBA title in 2019, was traded from the Los Angeles Clippers. In return, the Clippers received Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, future first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two second-round picks.
NBA Investigation into Endorsement Deal
The trade is currently on hold pending an investigation into Leonard’s $28 million endorsement deal with Aspiration, a now-bankrupt “green banking” company. Since September 2025, law firm Wachtell Lipton has been examining whether the Clippers used this endorsement to help Leonard evade salary cap restrictions. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer had invested $60 million in Aspiration, raising questions about the deal’s legitimacy.
Expanding Investigation Scope
Reports indicate the investigation has widened beyond Aspiration. Investigators are exploring whether the Clippers covered Leonard’s expenses without reimbursement and if he had other undisclosed endorsement agreements. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed hope for a conclusion soon, although the process has extended past expected timelines.
Trade Implications and League’s Role
Silver clarified that the NBA did not pause the Raptors’ trade. The decision to hold off was made by the involved parties, considering the ongoing investigation. Silver emphasized that teams were aware of potential contractual risks associated with Leonard before the trade was proposed, having consulted the league for clarification.
Challenges Facing Investigation
The investigation, led by Wachtell Lipton, has experienced delays due to complex legal issues, including bankruptcy proceedings and uncooperative witnesses. Silver receives weekly updates but noted that the final report is incomplete. He remains optimistic for resolution by the next season’s onset.
