Clippers owner Steve Ballmer had invested $60 million in Aspiration, raising questions about the deal’s legitimacy.

Reports indicate the investigation has widened beyond Aspiration. Investigators are exploring whether the Clippers covered Leonard’s expenses without reimbursement and if he had other undisclosed endorsement agreements. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed hope for a conclusion soon, although the process has extended past expected timelines.

Trade Implications and League’s Role

Silver clarified that the NBA did not pause the Raptors’ trade. The decision to hold off was made by the involved parties, considering the ongoing investigation. Silver emphasized that teams were aware of potential contractual risks associated with Leonard before the trade was proposed, having consulted the league for clarification.

Challenges Facing Investigation

The investigation, led by Wachtell Lipton, has experienced delays due to complex legal issues, including bankruptcy proceedings and uncooperative witnesses. Silver receives weekly updates but noted that the final report is incomplete. He remains optimistic for resolution by the next season’s onset.
