Major League Baseball’s first game after the All-Star break took place under challenging air conditions due to Canadian wildfires. The Philadelphia Phillies hosted the New York Mets in Philadelphia, where the air quality index hit 196. This was significantly lower than other parts of the Northeast and Midwest, where indices approached 500, deemed hazardous.
In response to air quality concerns, officials announced the game would start an hour earlier than the original 7:10 p.m. time. This decision proved beneficial under worsening air conditions.
The sun glowed an intense orange due to the wildfire smoke during the game.
New York Mets infielder Brett Baty noted irritation during the game, describing it akin to sitting by a campfire. Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez found visibility increasingly difficult as the game progressed, while pitcher Christian Scott expressed discomfort, comparing it to “breaking metal.” Phillies player Bryce Harper criticized the decision to play in such conditions, calling it unsuitable for sports.
Both teams’ interim managers, Don Mattingly and Andy Green, believed gameplay remained relatively unaffected. They credited umpire Dan Iassogna for consistently monitoring air quality and prioritizing player safety. Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh shared that umpires frequently checked with players regarding their comfort and well-being, a measure that was well-received by the team.
Notably, the Phillies avoided outdoor batting practice, with Mattingly wishing to minimize exposure. Despite the conditions, the game continued without relocation discussions, even with an upcoming scheduled break.
The Mets defeated the Phillies 4-1 amidst the challenging conditions.
Elsewhere, an MLS match in Chicago was postponed. Improved air quality is anticipated, particularly crucial for Sunday’s World Cup final between Argentina and Spain at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
