Borja Iglesias Faces World Cup Final with Complex Feelings

Spanish forward Borja Iglesias anticipates what may be the most significant match of his career, as Spain prepares to compete against Argentina in the World Cup final. This pivotal event is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at New York/New Jersey Stadium.

The potential victory would bring Iglesias into the spotlight as one of the players to meet President Donald Trump post-match. Despite the ceremonial duties, Iglesias has not hidden his views regarding the president, voicing his opinions to the Spanish media on Saturday.

“I don’t want to go to prison,” said Iglesias regarding the prospect of shaking Trump’s hand. “I hope to greet him at a time when we are all very happy and that it passes very quickly, so I can forget about it.”

While Iglesias acknowledges his stance could lead to controversy, he prefers to avoid it during this crucial period. He stated that his views are well-known, yet emphasized that his influence remains limited in certain areas.

Throughout his career, Iglesias has supported pro-Palestinian movements actively and criticized the former head of the Spanish soccer federation for his controversial actions post the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Addressing Trump’s approach, Iglesias remarked that the president “struggles” with individuals who advocate “for progress and fundamental values.” Trump’s attendance at the World Cup final has already been confirmed, following his involvement in the FIFA Club World Cup trophy presentation, as well as receiving the FIFA Peace Prize from Gianni Infantino during a previous event.
