An explosion outside the 26 Federal Plaza in New York City led to a fire and a large emergency response on Monday morning. Authorities have arrested one suspect linked to the incident near the Lower Manhattan federal building, home to agencies like the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The FDNY reported minor injuries for four individuals. Three declined transportation for medical care, while one was taken to New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital. In a statement to Newsweek, the FBI confirmed a suspect deployed an incendiary device and is now in custody. The FBI New York Office is conducting an investigation.
Reports of an outdoor fire at 26 Federal Plaza between Worth Street and Lafayette Street prompted FDNY’s response at 8:30 a.m. Two engine and two ladder companies responded. By 11 a.m., FDNY reported the situation secure and no further department presence needed.
New York City Democratic Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his relief over the lack of serious injuries and noted that cooperation with NYPD would continue to support the federal investigation. He emphasized the city’s commitment to safety and accountability for any threats.
The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force has taken up the investigation. While officials determine the explosion’s cause, no serious injuries have been reported.
Democratic Representative Hakeem Jeffries commended law enforcement for stopping the attack, apprehending the suspect, and ensuring public safety. He maintained that acts of terror and violence will never be tolerated and called for full legal prosecution of the responsible individual.
