President Donald Trump has directed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to U.S. airports to alleviate significant security delays and staffing shortages caused by the partial government shutdown. This initiative aims to ensure smooth travel during the busy spring break season. TSA employees have been without pay for over 37 days, exacerbating issues at airports nationwide.
Administration officials, including Tom Homan and Sean Duffy, emphasize that ICE agents will perform non-specialized tasks. Their assistance is crucial in reducing passenger wait times while maintaining airport security.
“We are committed to ensuring that passengers continue to receive adequate service despite challenges faced by TSA personnel,” a spokesperson explained.
In related news, a Southwest Airlines flight attendant was taken into custody by federal immigration authorities. Lorenzo Thompson, originally from Jamaica, allegedly overstayed his visa. He was arrested in Nashville, Tennessee, after authorities determined his visa had expired.
A spokesperson from ICE highlighted, “Mr. Thompson overstayed his visa against our nation’s laws. He will remain in ICE custody until his immigration proceedings conclude.” ICE has issued incentives for undocumented immigrants to self-deport, offering $2,600 and a free flight as part of the initiative.
The arrest of Thompson, a dedicated worker with aspirations for U.S. citizenship, prompted reactions from various organizations. TWU Local 556, representing Southwest Airlines flight attendants, affirmed, “All members deserve dignity and respect, and we support this member and his family through this challenging period.” The Labor Council for Latin American Advancement expressed Thompson’s work towards citizenship, stating he holds a valid work visa and has applied for asylum.
“He came seeking safety from life-threatening circumstances and has consistently followed legal paths for citizenship,” read an online crowdfunding page supporting Thompson’s legal expenses.
ICE agents are currently deployed at airports to relieve TSA staff shortages, maintaining the security and efficiency of passenger processing during peak travel times.
