Controversy Erupts Over Trump’s Intervention in World Cup Ban

An ethics complaint to FIFA might emerge following U.S. President Donald Trump’s involvement in overturning Folarin Balogun’s one-game suspension for a red-card offense during the World Cup. The Norway soccer federation is contemplating this action, with a decision expected by August 6, according to federation president Lise Klaveness.

Trump’s intervention involved a call to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, after which Balogun’s suspension was lifted, allowing him to play against Belgium. This decision preceded the U.S. team’s 4-1 defeat by Belgium, amidst heightened tensions and controversy. Trump criticized the referee’s original decision, condemning it as a “horrible” judgment, and claimed he influenced FIFA’s review process.

Lise Klaveness, a key figure within the UEFA executive committee, expressed concerns about the integrity of the game, stating that such interference threatens the sport’s principles. The ruling against Balogun marked an unprecedented departure from World Cup norms in the past six decades.

Klaveness emphasized the danger of undermining established rules, warning it jeopardizes the future of soccer. Her leadership in Norway’s soccer body has positioned it as a moral authority within the sport since her election in 2022. Previous actions by Norway include joining a lawsuit against Infantino for alleged political biases, such as awarding Trump a peace prize at a soccer event.

The ethical concerns have extended to the International Olympic Committee, where FairSquare, a human rights NGO, filed a similar complaint. Accusations cite Infantino’s breach of political neutrality, a claim compounded by Trump’s reported interest in Infantino’s future political career.

FIFA and the IOC have maintained silence on these complaints, raising doubts about the transparency of their internal processes. FIFA’s disciplinary actions, including Balogun’s case, remain largely unexplained due to procedural changes under Infantino’s leadership.
