WNBA All-Star Weekend Highlights Chicago’s Basketball Passion, Sky’s Missed Opportunity

The enthusiasm for women’s basketball in Chicago is unmistakable, especially after hosting the WNBA All-Star Game once again. The recent weekend confirmed the city’s commitment to the sport. The league projected a full house for Saturday’s All-Star Game at the United Center, anticipating over 20,000 fans downtown.

Chicago proudly hosts three women’s sports bars — Whiskey Girl Tavern, Babe’s Sports Bar, and Level Sporting Club. These venues organized events in collaboration with league partners like Nike. Although Chicago hosted the All-Star Game in 2022, the scene was vastly different four years ago. The event then, held at Wintrust Arena, catered to smaller crowds and fewer corporate activities. Players like Kahleah Copper noted that they had more leisure time back then.

Fast forward, this year’s All-Star weekend in Chicago saw players occupied with numerous commitments. Fans had an extensive array of choices, from parties to panels all around the city. Notable figures, including Barack Obama, Dwyane Wade, and Jayson Tatum, appeared at Friday’s festivities.

Yet, amid all celebrations, the Chicago Sky’s absence was striking. The team lacked representation in official WNBA events. Construction delays left them without a facility to host even their event. Injuries prevented players from participating in the league’s Shooting Stars event on Friday.

The Sky faced challenges with injuries to starters and Rickea Jackson’s absence. Her torn ACL halted a potential All-Star season. Despite these setbacks, their absence was conspicuous, as the team served as the host.

With over a decade of a somewhat tarnished reputation, the Sky haven’t been truly poor performers until now. Since 2016, at least one Sky player appeared in every All-Star game. In their 21-year history, they’ve only missed having an All-Star four times. The WNBA’s growth adds to the challenge, making it tougher for players to secure spots as more teams join the league. Still, this year’s absence underscores the Sky’s declining prominence as they approach their third season without playoffs.

The Sky have seen struggles before. Their 2021 season ended with a .500 record, yet they claimed their first championship. The franchise has a history of talent like Candice Dupree, Elena Delle Donne, and Allie Quigley. Typically, the Sky were never far from the league’s spotlight, maintaining a star presence.

Winning in the WNBA revolves around finding and developing star players. For now, the Sky lack such a figure. As Chicago reflects on a successful women’s sports weekend, the Sky must confront their challenging season. This experience should guide their priorities, ensuring they aren’t sidelined at future All-Star events.
