Fire Incident in Flushing, Queens Leaves Over 20 Injured

A significant fire broke out in Flushing, Queens, on Saturday morning, resulting in injuries to nearly two dozen people. The incident happened just before 10 a.m. on 41st Road near College Point Boulevard.

Fire Details

The fire originated on the first floor of a two-story, wood-frame house among a row of five buildings. These structures, built in 1930, consist largely of wood, facilitating the rapid spread of flames. Fire Operations Chief Kevin Woods noted the difficulty in controlling such blazes due to the combustible materials involved.

The fire escalated to a five-alarm status, involving over 250 firefighters and EMS personnel. By the time the firefighters arrived, two of the buildings were engulfed, with flames reaching a third structure. Emergency services managed to rescue a resident trapped on the second floor of the origin building.

Response and Injuries

At least 21 individuals sustained injuries, including 17 firefighters, two EMTs, and two residents. All have been taken to local hospitals for treatment. The reported injuries are not life-threatening and include heat exhaustion, smoke inhalation, and minor physical strains. One resident is in serious condition, while another is non-serious.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. Buildings in the area suffered substantial damage, displacing several families. The Red Cross is present to assist those affected. Residents nearby have been advised to keep windows closed to avoid smoke exposure, and drivers are cautioned about road closures and traffic disruptions.

The situation is now under control, but the FDNY continues to monitor for hotspots to prevent re-ignition.
