A van struck individuals gathered for a well-known LGBTQ+ event in Berlin on Saturday night, resulting in one fatality and at least 16 injuries. Police promptly canceled the celebrations and a concert in the German capital shortly after they had commenced. Some victims sustained life-threatening injuries.

Authorities urged attendees to vacate the site immediately as ambulances and firefighters attended to the casualties. Police officer Florian Nath mentioned in a video on X that an intensive search for suspects is underway. Meanwhile, police spokesperson Alexander Klute shared with The Associated Press that details about motives or those responsible remain unknown.

Van Hits Tiergarten Park

The incident involved a white van driving into Tiergarten park around 10 p.m. The location is near the path that the pride march had earlier traversed. The van struck several people before colliding with a tree. Although details on the number of officers involved in the response were not precise, a substantial police presence was confirmed. Over 2,200 officers had been tasked with safeguarding the pride parade and other LGBTQ+ events across Berlin since Saturday morning.

Witnesses at the scene provided accounts suggesting some victims might have incurred stab wounds, but these reports require further investigation. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner conveyed his shock, highlighting that the incident followed a peaceful and lively pride march. He described it as an assault on Berlin’s open and inclusive society. The mayor expressed trust in the ongoing efforts of police and security officials to resolve the matter.

The authorities have encouraged any potential witnesses to share photos or videos from the site of the tragedy. Additionally, a crisis hotline has been set up to aid those seeking friends or family.

Hundreds of thousands attended Berlin’s pride parade, recognized as Christopher Street Day, one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ festivities. The unfortunate incident led to the call-off of the iconic event near Brandenburg Gate around 10:15 p.m. A band’s stage performance was stopped, and individuals were advised to head home, avoiding paths through the park.

Before the tragedy, attendees had enjoyed the event, parading through the city, participating in music and dancing alongside 80 floats. Julian Miethig, a participant at the Brandenburg Gate event, shared that he learned of the incident through a friend, noting the significant emergency response presence. He expressed profound shock, marking the day as somber for the community.
