WNBA Commissioner Addresses Harassment and Racism Concerns

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert highlighted serious issues surrounding harassment against players during her press conference at the league’s All-Star game. She announced plans to address every aspect of the player experience, both on and off the court and online.

Addressing Harassment

Engelbert emphasized that racism, misogyny, homophobia, and harassment directed at players should not be tolerated in sports or elsewhere. She noted that while these issues have worsened recently, they have been present since her tenure began.

The Commissioner acknowledged that WNBA fans have raised concerns over recent racially charged incidents. For instance, Caitlin Clark was punched by Alyssa Thomas during a game on June 24. Additionally, Aces player Chelsea Gray reportedly received a racial insult via Instagram.

Controversy Management

Critics have questioned Engelbert’s handling of these controversies, with some suggesting her dismissal. When asked about her future as commissioner, she avoided a direct response. Engelbert expressed gratitude for her role during what she described as an “incredible hyper-growth period” for the league.

Combatting “Keyboard Warriors”

Regarding player security, Engelbert spoke about addressing messages from “keyboard warriors” targeting players through various online platforms. She committed to improving communication with players about these threats.

Engelbert also mentioned the transparency of investigations, fines, and suspensions but did not provide a direct answer. She regularly reiterated that “we have processes” and avoided specific details.
