Wildfires are tearing through Spain and France, forcing over 250,000 evacuations. In France, a fire threatens the Bordeaux wine region, and Spain has declared a national emergency. The French military is involved, and the Tour de France has been adjusted as crews battle the fires.
Impact on France
Over 250,000 residents have fled their homes in southwest France due to a large wildfire approaching Bordeaux. The blaze is creating its own winds, leading to unpredictable behavior. Another 55,000 people were evacuated overnight from areas south of Bordeaux. Strong winds, dry weather, and frequent heat waves have contributed to the fire’s spread.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the situation as “difficult” and mentioned the fire’s unpredictable nature, leading to challenging conditions for firefighters. The fire has consumed approximately 42,000 hectares, the size of four Paris cities, in the Gironde region. It neared Bordeaux, forcing a partial highway closure.
Efforts to Control the Fire
Over 2,500 firefighters, with the support of 18 planes and helicopters, are working to contain the fire. France has committed 1,500 soldiers to firebreak creation and vegetation clearance. Several nations have sent crews and aircraft to assist. Additionally, 450 volunteers have joined the efforts, providing critical support.
Pascal Roudier, a 65-year-old farmer, expressed solidarity, stating that they lend help, hoping others would do the same if roles were reversed. Their assistance is appreciated, given the disaster’s scale.
Other Affected Areas
The fire near Bordeaux is just one of several in France. In Landes, another fire caused 36,000 evacuations, and nearly 3,000 left homes in the Var region along the coast.
Situation in Spain
Spain is also grappling with wildfires. Authorities have evacuated around 116,000 individuals as fires burn in the Valencia region and west of Madrid. A fast-moving fire in a Valencia suburb resulted in one fatality, Spain’s first wildfire-related death in this fire wave.
Earlier, 13 people perished in Spain’s deadliest wildfire in recent times.
