The Carolina Panthers are facing significant challenges as linebacker Nic Scourton was injured on the first day of the team’s training camp. The injury, identified as an ACL tear, will sideline him for the entire season.
Nic Scourton, at 21 years old, had an impressive rookie year. He was a former second-round pick who recorded 47 tackles and five sacks, alongside other impressive statistics according to Pro Football Focus.
The situation around Scourton’s injury is now under scrutiny by the NFL Players Association. Reports indicate the NFLPA is conducting an investigation into the circumstances of the injury.
“A team spokesperson said the Panthers are aware of an NFLPA inquiry and they are cooperating with the PA regarding Thursday’s practice,” stated Mike Kaye of the Charlotte Observer.
Joe Person from The Athletic confirmed that the NFLPA will be reviewing video footage from that practice. This review will aim to determine if the Panthers adhered to the no-live contact rules during the first five days of training camp as set out by the collective bargaining agreement.
According to the current agreement, teams are prohibited from any live contact during this period. Only running and conditioning are permissible activities.
If it’s discovered that the Panthers violated this protocol, they risk penalties from the NFL. Possible repercussions include fines for coaches or the team, loss of future OTA days, and loss of draft picks.
