Tragic Loss of Red Panda Cubs at Santa Barbara Zoo

2 weeks ago 0

The Santa Barbara Zoo in California mourned the loss of two red panda cubs born earlier this summer. The second cub died over the weekend, following the death of its sibling earlier this month. This loss highlights the challenges faced by these endangered animals.

The red panda cubs, born to a red panda named Ruby on July 2, experienced a difficult start. They were the first offspring for Ruby. Despite intense efforts from the zoo’s veterinary and animal care teams, the second cub passed away. The zoo removed the cub from its mother on July 19 when it was observed not nursing correctly.

After separation, the cub received continuous care, including tube and bottle feedings, antibiotics, and round-the-clock monitoring in a temperature-controlled incubator. Despite these efforts, the cub remained in critical condition until its death. The cause of death is still being investigated, according to the zoo, which emphasized the emotional impact on those who cared for the cubs.

Ruby and Raj, the parent red pandas, will have a chance to breed again next year. Red pandas are known to be endangered, with the World Wildlife Fund citing habitat loss and accidental trapping as significant threats. The zoo estimates fewer than 10,000 mature red pandas remain in the wild.

These factors contribute to a high mortality rate of about 40% for red panda cubs. Conservation efforts continue to be essential for the survival of this species.
