An intense Senate meeting concluded in favor of President Donald Trump and his administration. Key Republicans changed their stance, thwarting another effort to limit the administration’s authority in Iran.
Before departing Washington, D.C. for a break exceeding two weeks, the Senate blocked Democrats’ efforts to curtail Trump’s war powers in Iran. Talks continue between the U.S. and Iran to establish a long-term peace agreement.
The resolution, introduced by Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., had previously passed, surprising Republicans. This time, majority leader John Thune, R-S.D., and other Senate GOP leaders advanced budget reconciliation to fund parts of the government impacted by opposition to Trump’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions.
Initially, the outcome seemed certain after a closed-door meeting where Trump and Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., debated over the Iran war and the administration’s transparency with lawmakers. Trump’s argument to Republicans focused on the passed war powers resolution weakening the negotiation stance with Iran.
Engagements with key figures at the White House changed their opinions, granting the administration a victory as efforts to secure a deal beyond the current 60-day memorandum with Iran progress.
