Sophie Cunningham’s Advocacy for Women’s Sports Sparks Rally and Debate

A rally supporting Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham took place outside her game against the Seattle Storm. Fans gathered to recognize Cunningham’s public stance on women’s sports. Images captured supporters with signs reading ‘Thank you Sophie’, and her statements ‘I said what I said’, and ‘with love is truth’.

Jean Chadbourne, an activist, highlighted the significance of the gathering, emphasizing the ability of women to unite publicly in support of female athletes.

“We proved to the world that women can gather publicly and support female athletes,” Chadbourne told Fox News Digital.

Attendees posed for photos with a life-size cutout of Cunningham. Meanwhile, counterprotesters with LGBTQ flags expressed their opposition at the scene.

The rally was organized by podcast host Brandi Kruse, activist Amy E. Sousa, and the group Women Are Real. The event was hotly debated on social media after its announcement.

Julie Lane, one organizer, reported online threats targeted at those planning the rally. Despite this, she noted a successful turnout.

“Despite the online threats, we showed up and had a great time. It’s clear that the tide is turning,” Lane said.

Cunningham had recently voiced her views on trans athletes in women’s sports to ESPN. Her comments sparked significant reaction.

Cunningham clarified her stance, emphasizing her focus on protecting young girls in sports. She expressed that extending love also involves being truthful about her beliefs.

Despite backlash, she reiterated her commitment to standing by her morals, voicing her support for protecting children’s sports.

“I extend love, and I don’t dislike anyone. I think there is room for absolutely everyone here,” Cunningham explained.

Her stance has received praise from figures like Riley Gaines and Jennifer Sey, as well as several GOP lawmakers and the White House.

During a briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt supported Cunningham, describing men participating in women’s sports as “ludicrous”.

“It’s even more ludicrous that you do have Sophie Cunningham, a female athlete herself, very accomplished in her own right,” Leavitt said.
