Jahmyr Gibbs Holds Out at Detroit Lions Training Camp

The Detroit Lions started their training camp without one of their key players, Jahmyr Gibbs. The running back was absent from the initial practice session. Gibbs, who is 24 years old, is currently eligible for a contract extension.

Lions coach Dan Campbell commented on the situation. He expressed confidence that the team and Gibbs are working toward an agreement. “You know how we feel about Gibbs and our team,” Campbell said, according to The Athletic. “We’ll take it as it comes. That’s where it is right now.”

Despite his absence on the field, Gibbs has reported to camp. He is not listed on the Physically Unable to Perform list or the Non-Football Injury list, indicating that his absence is likely a contract holdout.

The Lions picked Gibbs as the 12th overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. He quickly made an impact by adding excitement to the team’s offense. During his rookie season, Gibbs ran for 945 yards, scoring 10 touchdowns. He also caught 52 passes for 316 yards and a touchdown in 15 games.

“It’ll come as it comes. I think that’s the best way to say it,” said Campbell.

Gibbs shone in 2024, rushing for 1,412 yards and scoring 16 touchdowns. He also recorded 52 receptions for 517 yards and four more touchdowns. Last season marked his first as a full-time starter. Gibbs played 17 games, accumulating 1,223 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. He caught an impressive 77 passes, adding 616 yards and five touchdowns to his record.

Gibbs’ performance has earned him Pro Bowl selections in each of his three NFL seasons.
