Support for Protecting Women’s Sports
Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham recently voiced her opinion on keeping biological men out of women’s sports. The reaction from some members of the WNBA has been contentious. Former collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines discussed this during her podcast, “The Riley Gaines Show.” Gaines emphasized her commitment to ensuring that women and girls have the opportunities intended for them in sports.
“My entire brand has been built on protecting women’s sports,” Gaines stated. “This is not a slogan for social media or clicks online. I genuinely mean it. I want women to have the opportunity to compete and succeed in their sports, whatever they may be.”
According to Gaines, the WNBA seems intent on undermining themselves at every available chance. She highlighted the crossroads the league faces regarding opinions like Cunningham’s and their impact on the integrity and fairness of women’s sports.
The Divide in the WNBA
The WNBA is confronted with a decision: remain a professional women’s basketball league or evolve into an activism-driven group that occasionally plays basketball. Gaines remarks that currently, the league appears to be leaning towards the latter.
Beyond the WNBA, the broader societal implications are troubling. Gaines expressed concern about adults, including team owners, who criticize teenagers for supporting a common-sense belief. This behavior sends a disturbed signal to society at large.
“When grown adults feel emboldened to pick on teenage girls, there is something seriously wrong with society,” Gaines said. “How can you stand there and think you’re the bigger person?”
Such questions challenge societal norms, prompting individuals to reflect on their actions and beliefs.
