Current El Nino Strengthens with Potential Global Impact

5 days ago 0

The United Nations has expressed concern over the current strengthening of El Nino, which is already setting records for intensity in its early stages. United Nations officials warned that this phenomenon is likely to cause even more extreme weather globally as it intensifies.

A specific region of the Pacific Ocean used to gauge El Nino’s strength reached unprecedented warmth and intensity recently, according to Columbia University scientists. El Nino, characterized by the warming of the Pacific near the equator, disrupts weather patterns across the globe. Although it will take several months to peak, El Nino is anticipated to persist until spring 2027, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) cautioned, likely resulting in extreme heat, drought, and rainfall.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted that El Nino has already arrived, intensifying extreme summer weather events such as record-breaking heatwaves and wildfires. He highlighted the severe conditions seen in Spain, France, and other areas, warning that the worst is yet to come as El Nino strengthens.

Most forecast models suggest that this El Nino could break previous records for intensity by late fall, although it is not certain. Scientists agree with Guterres’ concerns, predicting future chaotic extremes in rain, drought, and temperature, partially due to the influence of long-term global warming from fossil fuel use.

Some areas like Indonesia, India, southern and eastern Australia, sections of South America, and southern regions in Africa may face drought and wildfires, while parts of the United States and fire-affected Southern Europe might experience above-average rainfall, as per WMO predictions.

While El Nino and climate change are distinct phenomena, their combination is detrimental. Guterres expressed that society often overlooks the link between these phenomena and the underlying climate crisis, which is fueled by fossil fuels.

He criticized the focus on conflicts like those in Ukraine, the Middle East, and Sudan, which overshadow the urgent climate threats. Additionally, Guterres emphasized the need for the public and governments to acknowledge climate change as an existential threat, urging action to mitigate the future impacts of fossil fuels.

Despite El Nino eventually concluding, the heat released during the event remains, exacerbating global warming. The U.N. calls for enhanced early warning and cooling systems to address extreme heat, notably impacting industries such as the garment industry where many workers face dangerous heat levels.

Guterres stressed the necessity to cease reliance on coal, oil, and gas to prevent a more volatile future, urging global leaders and industries to prioritize sustainable solutions for the climate crisis.
