The beginning of August brings growing concern among MLB fans over Paul Skenes’ recent performance. The Pittsburgh Pirates’ star pitcher struggled again on Friday night, allowing five runs on seven hits in a loss to the Cincinnati Reds. This marks the second consecutive game where Skenes gave up five runs, following a challenging month where he allowed at least five runs in three out of five starts.

His current ERA stands at 3.90, a notable increase of two runs compared to his stats from 2024 and 2025. Despite three successful games last month, where he went 3-0 and conceded a total of five earned runs, concerns remain. The fluctuations in his performance create a sense that something is amiss.

A noteworthy statistic emerged online that has fans worried: Skenes has not surpassed 98 MPH in his last four starts, and has done so only 95 seasons. In contrast, he exceeded this mark nearly 900 times last year and almost 700 the previous year.

Historically known for one of the league’s most dynamic fastballs, this season has seen a drop in his velocity. Speaking to DK Pittsburgh Sports last month, Skenes acknowledged that the change in his fastball speed was intentional and not concerning for him.

Despite Skenes’ explanation, the worrying statistics are unavoidable. He concluded his worst professional month by allowing five runs in consecutive games for the first time in his career, only lasting four innings.

Another statistic that raises eyebrows: last year, he allowed 41 earned runs. This year, across 23 starts, Skenes has conceded 54 earned runs. Fans and analysts alike question if this is a mere statistical anomaly or indicative of deeper issues.

The Pirates’ pre- and post-game host, Dan Zangrilli, shared a critical perspective post-loss, stating: “The ace didn’t ace. Far more questions than answers. For any of this to work, he has to. He looks like an out of shape, lumbering yeti sucking wind on a hot day.” His candid remarks highlight the scrutiny surrounding Skenes.

The discourse around Skenes’ form continues to cause debate within the baseball community. As August begins, clarity on his performance remains elusive.
