Chiefs Rookie Cyrus Allen Avoids Serious Injury After Camp Collision

A collision at Kansas City Chiefs training camp briefly threatened rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen’s promising start. Initial tests revealed Allen only suffered a shin bruise, with no significant damage like a tear or fracture, as reported by ESPN from inside sources.

He was not the only receiver to have a close call on Saturday. Fellow receiver Xavier Worthy encountered an incident during an 11-on-11 drill. After catching a deep pass near the end zone, he landed awkwardly on his shoulder.

Worthy has faced shoulder issues before in his NFL career. In the previous season, he hurt his right shoulder on the third snap when colliding with tight end Travis Kelce in a game against the Los Angeles Chargers. This led to an offseason surgery to repair the injury.

The incident with Allen happened during a special teams practice of pooch punts. Allen, along with defensive back Kaiir Elam, both acted as gunners. They accidentally collided near the goal line while pursuing the ball. Elam walked away, but Allen required assistance from two staff members to get onto a cart.

“I hate to see somebody get hurt, especially on a special teams drill,” Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub remarked. He noted how Allen had been performing excellently on offense and special teams, positioning himself well for the season.

Toub added that Chiefs’ rookies are expected to participate in special teams drills. The philosophy is that all players contribute to special teams until they establish themselves in other roles.

The Chiefs drafted Allen in the fifth round this April, and he quickly stood out as a key target for quarterback Patrick Mahomes during early camp practices. Allen has been leading the team’s wide receivers in catches during 11-on-11 drills.
