Being ranked as the top team in the nation sometimes seems to carry unexpected weight. In a rare occurrence, the Georgia Bulldogs, ranked No. 1, fell to an unranked Auburn Tigers team, 27-24. This loss marked the first time since 1990 that the No. 1 team was defeated by an unranked opponent in consecutive weeks. Georgia’s previous record boasted 53 consecutive wins against unranked teams.
The game unfolded with Georgia taking an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter. However, the Bulldogs could not capitalize on this advantage, failing to score on five subsequent drives. Their efforts included three punts, a missed field goal, and an interception. Auburn seized this opportunity, answering with 24 consecutive points.
Despite heading into the fourth quarter down by ten points, Georgia managed to narrow the deficit with an early field goal. They successfully forced Auburn to punt twice and capitalized on the second punt, driving 94 yards in 13 plays to tie the game.
Auburn’s offense stalled, resulting in another punt, giving Georgia possession at their own 39 with over a minute remaining. Georgia received a penalty for defensive pass interference on the first play. However, a sudden shift occurred when Georgia’s quarterback, Gunnar Stockton, fumbled, granting Auburn the ball at their own 44 with 58 seconds left and all timeouts remaining.
Auburn capitalized with 22 rushing yards on three plays, drawing a roughing the passer penalty to place their kicker, Alex McPherson, in range. McPherson successfully kicked the 34-yard field goal, sealing the upset victory.
The loss is Georgia’s first against an unranked opponent at home under coach Kirby Smart since 2019. The Bulldogs’ record now stands at 5-1, with potential movement in rankings as teams like Notre Dame, Miami, and Ohio State compete for the top spot. Auburn will next host No. 22 LSU, while Georgia takes a week off before facing Florida on Halloween.
