In Minneapolis, opinions clashed at the Target Center as the Indiana Fever faced the Minnesota Lynx. The discussion centered around Indiana guard Sophie Cunningham’s stance on transgender athletes in women’s sports. Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve made a statement with her attire. She wore a light blue shirt reading, “Trans kids belong” while leading the Lynx to a 108-100 victory.
Fans present wore T-shirts with messages like, “Trans kids belong in sports.” This marked the third Fever game following Cunningham’s support for excluding transgender girls and women from female sports in a recent ESPN article.
Before the game, Cunningham and Reeve met at midcourt for a brief conversation. Reeve commented on their discussion: “Both of us understand that we have platforms and we both talked about wanting to educate. There are some things that we have in common, and some you differ on, just like any issues. I think it’s how you handle things. It was nice to be in person, for sure.”
Cunningham faced booing with each touch during the game. Meanwhile, outside the arena, groups gathered near the entrance. A speaker advocated, “Protect trans women,” and attendees held signs with messages of love and support like “Love is truth” and “Thank you Sophie.”
Post-game, Caitlin Clark from the Fever addressed how the team manages the ongoing discussions: “I think we’re excellent. I think it’s for leagues and governing bodies to work with their athletes to find solutions,” focusing on basketball and improvement after their loss.
Cunningham expressed having no concerns about the rallies causing distractions for the Fever, saying: “I think everyone who knows me personally knows that I’m full of love. I’m bubbly. I love the people around me. I love basketball. I love inspiring the next generation positively. It doesn’t cross my mind. Doesn’t cross my teammates’ minds.”
