Cuba Faces Widespread Electricity Outage Amid Ongoing Energy Challenges

2 days ago 0

Cuba experienced a significant electricity outage late on Sunday. The state-owned grid operator announced that the island, home to around 10 million people, was plunged into darkness. This incident adds to the series of frequent blackouts affecting the country.

The latest outage follows three nationwide blackouts that occurred in July. These issues are exacerbated by a U.S. oil blockade, further straining Cuba’s aging energy infrastructure. Despite these events, the Union Electrica de Cuba has not provided additional details on their social media platforms, X and Facebook.

The pressure on Cuba’s power system is becoming more intense as the country struggles with fuel imports. The energy crisis intensified after the U.S. imposed an oil blockade under President Donald Trump. This action followed the U.S. government’s decision to oust Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in January, which disrupted Cuba’s fuel supply.

Venezuela was previously Cuba’s primary oil supplier. Now, imports from Mexico have also ceased due to increased U.S. pressure, adding more complexity to the situation. In response to these challenges, Cuba has begun cautiously opening its energy sector, historically under tight control.

Recent developments include the authorization of Cuba’s first foreign-backed fuel import venture. Additionally, nearly 200 Cuban businesses have been permitted to engage in wholesale fuel distribution. These steps illustrate Cuba’s attempt to navigate the fuel shortages and severe sanctions imposed by the U.S.
