USC and Notre Dame to Renew Rivalry with New Series

The Trojans’ head coach, Lincoln Riley, expressed satisfaction with the decision to renew the annual rivalry game between USC and Notre Dame. He emphasized the importance of balancing this with the broader needs of the Trojans.

The schools have agreed to a new four-year series starting in 2030. These games will commence in Week 1 at the Coliseum, followed by a game at Notre Dame Stadium in 2031. The 2032 and 2033 matchups will occur during the initial weeks of the season.

Riley highlighted the importance of scheduling the game early in the season, citing USC’s obligations to their conference schedule. He noted the constraints faced by USC which limit their flexibility compared to an independent Notre Dame.

Despite criticism regarding the hiatus of this rivalry, Riley consistently pointed out the challenges USC faces with their demanding Big Ten schedule, contrasting it with Notre Dame’s ability to craft less challenging lineups.

On Monday, both institutions emphasized the significance of the longstanding rivalry, reaching an agreement to ensure its continuation.

USC carries a historical record of 37-53-5 against Notre Dame, excluding one vacated victory due to NCAA sanctions. Riley currently holds a 1-3 record against Notre Dame during his tenure.

The traditional contest, involving the pursuit of the Jeweled Shillelagh, remains crucial for fans, alumni, and former team members. Riley affirmed, “I think this benefits everyone involved… our fan base… alumni… former players and coaches.”
