Shedeur Sanders Faces Criticism in NFL Quarterback Rankings

Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders showed moments of promise during his rookie season in 2025. Despite these flashes, coaches and executives remain unimpressed, as reflected in The Athletic’s 2026 NFL quarterback tiers list. Sanders ranked last among 35 quarterbacks.

A defensive coordinator expressed confidence in facing Sanders regularly. An unnamed executive criticized Sanders’ accuracy across all three levels, noting a significant gap between him and competent quarterback play.

The list categorized quarterbacks into tiers, from Tier 1, the best, to Tier 5, the worst. Of 50 surveyed executives and coaches, Sanders received 37 Tier 4 votes and 12 Tier 5 votes, with only one Tier 3 vote. Critics noted Sanders struggles with on-time play and reading coverages, coupled with a heavier build than expected.

Sanders competes with Deshaun Watson for the starting role as Browns training camp progresses. Watson, back from an Achilles injury, was ranked 31st among the 35 quarterbacks. Sanders was named starter for the last six games of the 2025 season, throwing for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, with a 56.6% completion rate.

New Browns head coach Todd Monken, known for his offensive focus, might aid Sanders’ development. A voter likened Monken’s impact to Ben Johnson’s positive influence in Chicago. The voter suggested that if Sanders improves his professional conduct and efficiency, there could be potential upside.

Monken has maintained that a genuine competition exists for the starting quarterback position. Sanders, Watson, and Dillon Gabriel continue to vie for the role in Browns camp. The Browns’ preseason starts on August 15 against the Chicago Bears.
