President Trump proclaimed back in April that the Reflecting Pool would be ‘restored to all its glory,’ attributing its previous neglect to Presidents Obama and Biden. He awarded no-bid contracts to allies for installing a water purification system and lining the pool with blue reminiscent of the American flag. The renovation costs hit $1.5 million, but complications soon arose. Observers noted peeling, bubbling liners, blooming algae, and green water. The repair expenses skyrocketed to over $16 million.

In early June, Trump grew anxious over completing the renovation before the 250th July 4 celebrations. On June 19, former Olympian David Hearn faced arrest for property destruction after touching a peeling blue strip, sparking Trump’s claims that vandals desecrated the monument. He described extensive damage as a ‘350-foot gash’ made with knives, yet no evidence supported his accusations. A fence surrounded the pool while repairs proceeded discreetly.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro aligned with Trump’s incendiary rhetoric. Critics view Pirro as America’s most lawless prosecutor, known for unrestrained criticism. In her previous role as Westchester County district attorney, she labeled defendants with derogatory terms and encouraged juries with harsh rhetoric, echoing the style of her friend, Trump.

Despite losing races for New York attorney general and senator, Pirro joined Fox News for 14 years, where her outbursts often landed her in trouble, including defamatory claims that landed Fox in a major lawsuit. Executives at Fox viewed her as reckless, often rebuked by judges for unethical conduct. Her July 2 press conference castigating Hearn contrasted with her July 31 motion to dismiss the charges, citing a flawed installation by contractors.

Pirro’s office linked the damage to contractor failures, presenting photos and reports as evidence, but accused the Department of the Interior of withholding crucial information. Media scrutiny remains absent regarding Pirro’s dismissal and whether her office conducted due investigations post-Hearn’s arrest.

Trump criticized Pirro’s decision to dismiss, claiming she ‘choked.’ Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota highlighted the debacle as symbolic of Trump’s presidency, pointing to Trump’s imaginary problem-solving stance and the resultant chaos and mismanagement.
