When I informed my father that we were going to have tacos with Steve Hilton, he laughed heartily and remarked, “Isn’t he with Trump?” His perception of Hilton as a supporter of the former president indicated the complexity of a political figure attempting to win over California voters, especially within the Latino community. Hilton, recognized for his past role as a Fox News host, aims to reform California as its governor by promoting affordability, reduced taxes, and the American dream.
Hilton’s strategy involved directly addressing those critical of Trump by suggesting they could endorse him over his Democratic competitor, Xavier Becerra. My father quipped that Hilton would adapt his rhetoric as needed, encapsulating the skepticism some voters feel towards such political promises.
We met Hilton at King Taco in East Los Angeles, dressed in traditional ranch-style attire reflecting our libertarian spirit. Hilton arrived looking ready for a casual outing, wearing a black shirt and dark slacks, complemented by a wristband supporting various causes.
Earlier that year, I challenged Hilton to meet us after he was ridiculed online for his unusual take on tacos at a Del Taco location. Despite this, Hilton remained focused on engaging with Latino communities, frequently visiting East L.A. and involving himself in local cultural events.
As we awaited our tacos, Hilton spoke about the persistent issues facing the area, citing poverty and crime, alongside the rising cost of living as core challenges. He criticized the Democrats for assuming the Latino vote was secured without addressing these everyday concerns. Steve Hilton, during our meal, emphasized that Latinos represent both California’s past and its future, pushing for broader recognition and inclusion.
My father and I appreciated Hilton’s optimistic approach but highlighted a significant point of contention: his distinction between legal and undocumented immigrants. Many in our community, including my family, transitioned from undocumented status to citizenship. This background prompted a strong reaction to Hilton’s emphasis on legal immigration.
Hilton aimed to clarify his position, attempting to differentiate between those who wish to remain illegally and those involved in criminal activity. It was clear Hilton’s attempts at defining the immigrant narrative still needed refinement, despite his outreach efforts.
Throughout our interaction, Hilton defended his image against accusations shared by his opponents. He positioned himself against claims of racism, attributing his immigration stance to a need for control over border entry rather than racial motivations.
Discussing potential reforms, Hilton admitted that his priority wouldn’t be undocumented immigrants, focusing instead on economic challenges facing all Californians. Although he acknowledged undocumented immigrants’ challenges, he saw a governor’s role as limited in resolving federal immigration laws.
Nevertheless, Hilton appeared committed to ensuring law enforcement acted humanely, aware of the community disruptions caused by raids. He remained skeptical of accusations that the Trump administration’s actions were driven by racism.
Despite our disagreements, common ground was found in the shared immigrant experience between my father and Hilton, acknowledging the unique challenges faced by first-generation Californians. Yet, Hilton’s stance remained too aligned with stringent immigration actions for my father’s support.
Hilton’s vision for California included simplifying processes bogged down by bureaucracy, advocating for a return to an era of individual opportunity and less political red tape. My father, interpreting Hilton’s enthusiasm, appreciated these goals but couldn’t align them with the broader Republican platform.
As we concluded our meeting, my father humorously declined Hilton’s suggestion to split support across party lines, citing a preference for candidates less aligned with affluent interests. Our conversation with Hilton concluded with mutual respect but a clear continuation of differing political views.
