Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger Faces Criticism at Galax Event

Virginia Democratic Governor Abigail Spanberger encountered boos at the Virginia Old Fiddlers’ Convention. The governor is dealing with declining poll numbers and ongoing political repercussions from a failed redistricting effort by the Democrats.

At the Galax gathering, which celebrated its 90th year, Spanberger received a cold reception from parts of the audience as she approached the microphone. Video footage captured the lukewarm response as she took the stage briefly. In her social media update, Spanberger mentioned attending the convention but omitted any reference to the negative reaction.

Governor Abigail Spanberger expressed excitement about the event, saying, “I’m in Galax. We just went to the Old Fiddlers’ Convention and I joined community members at the Poor Man’s Dinner. It was an incredible time. There was great food, great music, and great community.”

Spanberger’s popularity has waned within months of her first year in office. A July poll by Virginia Commonwealth University indicated that 44% of registered voters approved of her job performance, while 47% disapproved. This represents an unusually low approval rating for a new Virginia governor.

Spanberger emerged from a contentious mid-decade redistricting battle. She supported a Democratic initiative to potentially reshape Virginia’s congressional districts. Although voters narrowly approved the proposal in April, the Virginia Supreme Court later invalidated it, ruling 4-3 that required constitutional procedures were not adhered to.

Republican Delegate Tom Garrett remarked on the reception, citing the unsuccessful redistricting attempt as wasteful. He noted that Spanberger had initially opposed mid-decade redistricting for power gain but then led the charge on the effort. Republican Delegate Wren Williams, representing the Galax area, echoed the sentiment, questioning Spanberger’s affordability agenda and its results.

The governor’s office responded differently, stating that Spanberger and her husband enjoyed their time at the convention. They appreciated the opportunity to engage with community members and the event’s music and activities. Spanberger’s office expressed gratitude for those who made the event a success and a source of pride for Virginians.

The Old Fiddlers’ Convention, a Galax tradition, attracts musicians and visitors for bluegrass and old-time music performances. Spanberger’s experience at the event underscores the challenges Democrats face in Virginia outside of their strongholds in Northern Virginia and other populous regions. Despite a 15-point win in the governorship last November, she faces resistance in areas like Southwest Virginia.
