Caleb Thielbar’s Frustrating Season

Caleb Thielbar, a 39-year-old lefty reliever for the Chicago Cubs, is finding humor amid his challenging season. Despite not walking a batter in his last 15 appearances since June 29, his performance has been suffering. Thielbar stated humorously, ‘Oh great, we can’t talk about that.’ During these appearances, he has a 7.30 ERA, allowing 10 runs on 18 hits, including five home runs.

The perplexing part of Thielbar’s season is his consistent underlying metrics compared to his stellar 2025 performance. He continues to strike out batters, with 15 in his last 12 1/3 innings, and his average fastball velocity has increased by 0.5 mph from last year. However, he has been unlucky with a Batting Average on Balls in Play (BABIP) rising from .226 in 2025 to .314.

Thielbar’s issues primarily stem from less crisp command, allowing too many pitches to be hit for damage. He has given up a career-high 10 home runs this season in 35 2/3 innings. Manager Craig Counsell is examining factors such as pitch selection and sequencing to address these challenges.

‘I know Caleb’s going to have to get big outs still, and we’re going to continue to use him in big spots because he’s going to be our best matchup in some situations,’ Counsell said.

Phil Maton’s Hope to Return

Veteran reliever Phil Maton is coping with a partially torn patellar tendon, adding doubt to his return this season. Initially labeled as tendinitis, the knee issue has persisted, affecting his ability to contribute.

Despite a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection, there remains uncertainty about whether Maton can resume active duty. Both sides will evaluate his progress by late August to determine if he can begin a comeback attempt.

There is discussion around potential offseason procedures if Maton cannot manage the partial tear effectively.

Braxton Garrett’s New Opportunity

Braxton Garrett, recently acquired by the Cubs from the Miami Marlins, is adjusting to his new team. Having spent his professional career with the Marlins since being drafted in 2016, the trade was a significant transition.

Garrett is focused on improving his command post-second Tommy John surgery and looks forward to showcasing his capabilities with the Cubs. Manager Counsell emphasized Garrett’s potential to contribute in future seasons.

Counsell expressed optimism, stating, ‘We think he’s coming into a really good spot. He pitched very well in Triple A this year, and we’re optimistic.’
