Bob Iger and Joshua Kushner to Acquire Los Angeles Lakers

1 day ago 0

Bob Iger, the longtime CEO of Disney, and Joshua Kushner, venture capitalist and younger brother of Jared Kushner, are in the process of purchasing the Los Angeles Lakers. The $12.5 billion deal will see them buy the iconic NBA team from Mark Walter’s ownership group.

This sale marks a significant moment, happening less than a year after Mark Walter acquired the Lakers for $10 billion. His ownership was under scrutiny due to a federal investigation into his financial activities, particularly concerning related-party transactions.

Kushner, who founded the venture capital firm Thrive Capital, and Iger, expressed their enthusiasm in a statement to ESPN, highlighting their lifelong passion for the NBA and their commitment to the Lakers, a world-renowned sports franchise.

The acquisition comes after a report confirmed that the transaction amounts to $12.5 billion, which is $2.5 billion more than Walter’s purchase price from the Buss family.

Moreover, Bob Iger, along with Willow Bay, has expanded their investment interests by becoming controlling owners of Angel City Football Club. This decision is part of their effort to contribute $50 million to support the club’s financial growth and address its budget shortfalls. The arrangement is pending approval from the National Women’s Soccer League.

Mark Walter’s financial dealings have been under federal investigation, focusing on complex related-party transactions. These transactions often involve agreements between entities with close business or personal connections, potentially leading to conflicts of interest requiring careful examination.
