North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the sea on Wednesday, marking the second weapons test in less than a week. This follows the announcement by South Korea and the U.S. of upcoming large-scale military drills, which North Korea perceives as a threat.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff detected the missile fired from North Korea’s eastern Wonsan area at around 6 a.m., heading toward its eastern waters. In response, South Korea has strengthened its surveillance and coordination with the U.S. and Japan.
The Japanese Defense Ministry also noted the missile launch, indicating it did not enter Japan’s exclusive economic zone, likely landing further from Japan’s coast.
The recent missile launch happens just two days after South Korea and the United States announced the Ulchi Freedom Shield drills. Beginning Monday, the 11-day exercises involve 18,000 South Korean troops, aiming to enhance defense against North Korean threats.
North Korea has a history of provocative responses to such drills, seeing them as rehearsals for invasion. The country argues these military exercises force it to enhance its nuclear capabilities for self-defense. However, the U.S. and South Korea insist their drills are purely defensive.
On August 6, South Korea, the U.S., and Japan detected a short-range ballistic missile launch from North Korea. This was North Korea’s first ballistic weapons test since June, though it remains unconfirmed by North Korean authorities.
North Korea’s frequent weapons testing follows the breakdown of high-level diplomacy between Kim Jong Un and former U.S. President Donald Trump in 2019. These diplomatic efforts collapsed primarily over disagreements regarding international economic sanctions targeting North Korea.
