Bonnie Tyler Remembered by Fans in Wales

Hundreds of fans gathered in a Welsh coastal town on Saturday to bid farewell to singer Bonnie Tyler as her coffin was brought back home. Known worldwide for her hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” the Grammy-nominated Welsh pop star passed away last month in a Portuguese hospital at 75 years old.

Tyler was hospitalized in May in Faro, where she owned a home, for emergency intestinal surgery. Neighbors and fans from across the UK and beyond lined the streets of Mumbles, near Swansea, to view the hearse carrying her Welsh-flag-draped coffin. Many waited outside her former home, leaving floral tributes.

“She always came back home, always returned to her fans in Wales,” said Carys Edwards, 18. “Her songs touched many people here in Wales; she was loved dearly.” Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler was the daughter of a coal miner, raised in council housing with an outdoor toilet in Skewen, just 11 kilometers from Swansea. She grew up with three sisters and two brothers.

The singer earned three Grammy nominations and represented Britain in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, finishing 19th. In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II honored her as a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to music, primarily due to “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” The ballad topped charts in Britain and the United States, with over a billion streams, particularly during actual eclipses in 2017, 2024, and more recently this week’s solar eclipse. Her other hits included “It’s a Heartache” and “Holding Out For a Hero” from the “Footloose” soundtrack.

On Monday, a ceremony celebrating Tyler’s life will be held for family and friends at a church in Swansea before she makes a final journey through her hometown of Skewen.
