Lani Pallister’s Triumph Over Katie Ledecky in 800m Freestyle

Australian swimmer Lani Pallister achieved a significant victory by defeating Katie Ledecky in the 800m freestyle event. This win ended Ledecky’s streak of 13 international championship gold medals, which had been ongoing since 2012.

Pallister completed the race in 8 minutes and 6.10 seconds at the Pan Pacific Championships, surpassing Ledecky by 1.16 seconds in Irvine, California. She dominated the race from the start and maintained her lead throughout.

Despite Ledecky’s efforts to close the gap between 700 meters and 750 meters, where she outpaced Pallister by seven tenths of a second, Pallister retained her composure.

Ledecky noted it was her best swim of the meet, saying, “I’m actually pretty happy with it. If I was going to get second tonight, I wanted to make it a good one.”

At 24 years old, Pallister had been looking up to Ledecky and even saved her autograph from 2014. The anticipation before the race marked her most nerve-wracking experience, but she had prepared for this moment.

At the 2025 Worlds, Pallister secured a silver medal, finishing just 36 hundredths behind Ledecky in what was one of the closest 800m free races of Ledecky’s career. In these Pan Pacs, Pallister was also just 2.53 seconds behind Ledecky in the 1500m free.

Pallister managed to beat Ledecky for the first time in any distance, also winning the 400m free. Ledecky, who won the 800m free at the 2012 Olympics at 15 and continued to secure further Olympic golds, faced a new challenge.

The Pan Pacific Championships, a meet for non-European swimmers, represents the most crucial competition of 2026 for U.S. and Australian swimmers.

Pallister expressed admiration for Ledecky, saying, “Katie’s such a dominant force. We get to chase Katie, and without her, women’s distance swimming wouldn’t be where it is today.”

Ledecky’s only other defeat in the 800m free over 16 years came against Canadian Summer McIntosh at a small Florida meet in February 2024.

At the 2028 Olympics, the 800m free will be the last individual event. Ledecky aims to become the second athlete to win the same individual Olympic event five times.

Ledecky mentioned, “I’m really excited about the next two years. I can reflect over the next couple weeks about where I can improve. It’s been a really great stretch for me since May 2025.”

In other events, Kate Douglass broke the 50m freestyle world record in both the prelims and final, anchored the U.S. women’s 4x100m medley relay to gold, and earned silver in the 200m breaststroke.

China’s Yu Yiting won the 200m individual medley, setting a Championship Record of 2:07.45. She narrowly defeated Olympic gold medalist Summer McIntosh, who had won multiple events at the 2025 World Championships.

McIntosh, coached by Bob Bowman, expressed some disappointment with her performances. Her coach noted this meet was their first taper meet, and they are still adapting their training methods.

Australian Samuel Short completed a sweep of the 400m, 800m, and 1500m freestyle events, following his success at the Commonwealth Games.
